The Cycling the Erie Canal interactive web site is a user-friendly GIS-based website, with key information about the Erie Canalway Trail, historic and cultural attractions, lodging, bike shops, and visitor information.
This website was based on the popular guidebook Cycling the Erie Canal – A guide to 400 miles of adventure and history along the Erie Canalway Trail, available at www.ptny.org/guidebook/index.shtml.
The website complements and enhances the guidebook by providing the following:
| * |
An interactive map of the Erie Canalway Trail and its environment |
| * |
Information about the surface of different parts of the trail |
| * |
A searchable database of attractions, lodging, and services found near the trail |
Keep the following in mind when using the website:
Response Time- please note that the map display can be rather complex to process and display via the Internet. Response time might be affected by the speed of your Internet connection and number of features displayed on the map;
Scale Dependent Map Layers- some map layers will only display when the user is zoomed into a small geographic area (less than 5-10 square miles). The database of attractions, lodging and services found along the trail is one such scale-dependent map layer. This is done to ensure speedy display of the geographic images when panning across the map window.
